Wildlife Habitat Restoration Project
Alysion Acres is seeking volunteers to assist with restoration of a 14-acre wildlife preserve that borders the San Pedro River Riparian Area. The land is under WHIP (Wildlife Habitat Incentive Project). When we purchased the property 16 years ago the soil was totally caked and denuded, devoid of wildlife and grazeable vegetation. The preserve has been seeded repeatedly with native grasses.
We need help distributing mulch, creating wildlife habitats, cutting non-native salt cedar, building birdhouses, wetland management, placing and filling feeders, constructing a blind, constructing a nature trail and rest areas, propagation/planting of plants to encourage birds and butterflies, seeding wildflowers, labeling vegetation, trapping/removal of bullfrogs and other non-native species which compete with native endangered species, grant writing for funding improvements, monitor/report abuse of riparian area, fence maintenance, etc. In return, we offer, by advance reservation, use of the property for river access, picnicking, birding, hiking, wildlife observation, "wilderness" tent camping, construction of "Thoreau" cabin, construction of Native American Pit House, and horseback riding access.
We envision a bluebird trail, purple martin housing, a stand of milkweed for the caterpillars of Monarch butterflies, a self-guided nature trail and wildlife observation blind, bird feeding stations, salt licks for the deer, drinking and bathing pools for the wildlife, and so on. Would you like to help? What is your vision? One day we also hope to obtain the funding to dig an artesian well to maintain a protected 3-acre pond/wetland for the breeding of rare and endangered native species, and possibly establish an area for wildlife rehabilitation. If you have the desire to help either physically or financially it would be greatly appreciation and a legacy you can leave for the wildlife of the San Pedro River Valley. Please contact us and let us know your ideas.
We would like to be able to offer quarterly tours, educational materials, and classes in such topics as attracting birds and butterflies to home gardens, bird/plant/wildlife identification, solar cooking, habitat restoration, local history, recycling, composting, anything to get the public practicing environmental conservation. To this end we could use volunteers to share their expertise.
Unable to help physically? Please consider a donation of materials for constructing wildlife housing, landscape maintenance tools, native seeds, bird houses, butterfly houses, bat houses, nesting materials, bird feeders, bird seed, suet, salt blocks, field glasses, picnic tables, benches, drip irrigation... Or books on grant writing, native flora and fauna, wildlife habitat restoration, riparian areas, field guides, attracting birds and butterflies... Expertise, suggestions, referrals or contact ideas, grant writing, promotional ideas, advise on obtaining 501C status, obtaining donations from businesses or organizations... We and the wildlife will be grateful for any assistance.
It would be lovely to make the Alysion Acres Wildlife Preserve a showcase to invite school and other groups to visit to educate and promote the preservation and restoration of riparian and wildlife habitat.
