A Man Said to the Universe
Stephen Crane
by Stephen Crane, 1899

A man said to the universe:
“Sir, I exist!”
“However,” replied the universe,
“The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.”

A tribe said to the universe,
“Sir, we exist!”
“So I see,” said the universe,
“But your multitude creates in me
No feeling of obligation.
